The original Middle Cove House was designed in the sixties by architect Bruce Rickard. It was well arranged (of course) in a narrow configuration across the very steep site with all spaces facing north and to the view to Middle Harbour. Castlepeake’s work included the retention of the general form of the building and alterations and additions made in keeping with the original materials and details.
An additional level was created within the existing subfloor space of the house along with a new elevated swimming pool at the edge of a steep drop off running across the site. This new level is linked to the two upper storeys and the street by a new entry and stair which is located outside the existing footprint of the building.
The removal of the original stair from the main floorplate allowed internal rearrangement and expansion of the living spaces to suit the client’s needs. The steep topography, and excavation required to create and access the new level provided many challenges.
